History of Rugby Union

-rugby has emerged as a variant of football

-Heineken Cup (12 teams from IRE, ENG, SCO, FRA, WAL, ITA)- 2006 won by

province Munster (Ireland)

-In Caid (Gaelic football) found similar origins and rugby Common characteristics

(eg:area enclosed, fixed number of players, Tackling)

-Founded in 1854 R.H. Scott a rugby club at Trinity College, Dublin (Oldest rugby

club in the world)

-1874 Irish Football Union (ITU) was founded, forerunner of the Irish Rugby Football

Union (IRFU)

-First international match on 02.15.1875 in London

-First game at Lansdowne Road (Dublin, traditional venue the Irish national rugby

team) on 03/11/1878

-1890 rugby played mainly by Protestants (only one Catholic in national team)
